In 1954, Marsh & McLennan, Inc.,
the world's largest insurance brokerage firm, opened a branch office in Charleston,
WV and hired Robert L. Golden to operate it. In 1982, Mr. Golden purchased that
branch office in the name of R. L. Golden Associates, Inc. and continued to operate
it until his retirement in 1998. He sold it to Gary D. Dickens, a long-time employee,
who changed the name to Dickens Insurance Services, Inc. and moved the office location
to Dunbar.
In November, 2000, Dickens Insurance Services, Inc. bought Clark Insurance Agency,
Inc. in Scott Depot, WV and moved to the present office location in Teays Valley
occupied by the Clark agency. Our agency, in effect, is the successor agency to
the West Virginia operation of Marsh & McLennan, now known as Marsh, USA. We
still have a close affiliation with Marsh today, providing countersignature services
and surplus lines filings with the State of West Virgina for them.
Our agency serves a customer base that
extends throughout West Virginia. Our 4000+ customers can be found in at least 34
of the 55 counties and they buy all types, lines and sizes of policies - from renter's
policies with premiums starting at $100 a year all the way up to industrial accounts
paying in excess of $500,000 annually for a comprehensive insurance program.
We are truly an all-lines, full-service independent insurance agency. We have direct
contracts with more than 2 dozen national and regional insurance companies and an
additional ten or twelve brokerage firms providing access to hundreds more specialty
carriers. There are not very many risks or exposures that we will not tackle. We
take pride in finding markets for the tough or hard-to-place risks.
We write property & casualty, health and life, personal and/or commercial, group
or individual - in all areas of the state.
We sell Property & Casualty insurance policies and programs through the following
companies: American International Group, American States, Celina Insurance Group,
Dairyland, Farmer's Mutual, Fidelity & Deposit Co., Foremost, Hartford, Maryland
Casualty, Municipal Mutual, Old Republic Surety, Progressive, Safeco, Shelby Casualty,
St. Paul, State Auto Mutual, Western Surety, WV Fire & Casualty, WV National
Auto and Zurich American Insurance Group.
We also write Health and Life insurance
with American States Life, C N A Life, Hartford Life, Safeco Life, Conseco, Fortis,
Carelink, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Central Reserve Life, Golden Rule, Union Central
Life and numerous others.
